๐ฝ๏ธ Microsoft PowerPoint: From Blank Deck to Designed Presentation
Open a blank deck, and by the end of this course you'll be building presentations that look designed rather than default โ a pitch deck, a training deck, a visual portfolio โ using layouts and the Slide Master instead of fighting each slide by hand, adding video and tasteful motion (including PowerPoint's signature Morph), delivering with speaker notes, Presenter View and Speaker Coach, and co-authoring in real time. All in the presentation tool the working world runs on, with a hands-on project in every single lesson.
๐ฝ๏ธ PowerPoint in 60 Seconds
Microsoft PowerPoint is the industry-standard presentation app โ part of Microsoft Office / Microsoft 365. It's the tool for building a deck โ a sequence of slides you show on a screen to support a talk, a pitch, a lesson, or a report. It has done that job for over thirty years, which is why "a PowerPoint" is practically a synonym for "a presentation." Three things are worth knowing before you start:
- There's a genuinely free version. Sign in with a free Microsoft account at microsoft365.com and use PowerPoint for the web in your browser, saving to a free OneDrive. It covers the core of everything this course teaches โ you can complete most of it without paying anything.
- The desktop app is the powerhouse. A Microsoft 365 subscription unlocks the full desktop PowerPoint on Windows and Mac, where the deepest features live โ Morph, advanced animation, and more. We flag every desktop-only / paid feature honestly so you're never confused.
- It's the common currency of presentations. The
.pptxfile is what workplaces, schools, and conferences expect. When you have to hand a deck to someone else, PowerPoint is what they can open โ a real, practical advantage.
Underneath, it's a deep presentation tool: layouts and the Slide Master, themes and Designer, images, shapes, icons and SmartArt, video and audio, transitions and animation, speaker notes and Presenter View, real-time co-authoring, and AI help through Copilot. People use it for pitch decks, lessons and training, conference talks, portfolios, and shared team presentations. By the end of this course, you'll have built several of those yourself โ and understand what makes a deck look designed and land with an audience.
๐ About This Course
Most people use PowerPoint at about 10% of its power: they type walls of bullet points onto the default template, hand-fiddle each slide until it looks vaguely aligned, and read the slides aloud to a bored audience. This course fixes that. We start from a blank deck โ no assumptions, no jargon โ and build, lesson by lesson, until presentations feel less like a chore and more like a craft you're genuinely good at.
The path is deliberate. First you get comfortable adding and organizing slides and using layouts (the difference between a deck that fights you and one that stays consistent is real, and we teach it). Then we tackle the Slide Master โ the single idea that lets you restyle an entire deck in one place instead of touching fifty slides. From there: real design with themes, color, type, images, shapes, Designer and SmartArt; video and tasteful motion including Morph; structuring and delivering a talk with speaker notes, Presenter View, and Speaker Coach; genuine collaboration and co-authoring; four complete real-world projects; and a capstone where you build a full, designed presentation from scratch.
Every lesson is project-driven: you don't just read, you build in your own deck. And every lesson teaches you how to think about presentations โ why the master beats hand-formatting, why the slide supports the speaker instead of replacing them โ not just which button to click, because the ribbon moves between versions but the concepts last for decades and carry straight over to Google Slides too.
โ ๏ธ An honest word about free vs paid
You can complete most of this course for free using PowerPoint for the web with a free Microsoft account. Some of the deepest features live only in the paid Microsoft 365 desktop apps โ we flag each one clearly as it comes up. The big desktop-only ones: Morph (authoring), the full Animation Pane and motion paths, and some export-to-video options. Copilot โ PowerPoint's AI that drafts and rewrites decks โ is a separate paid add-on and never required here. Microsoft's plans and prices change constantly and vary by region and account, so we don't quote dollar figures โ we point you to Microsoft's own pages for current numbers.
๐ก An honest word about PowerPoint vs Google Slides
We compare the two respectfully throughout, because they're genuinely different tools.
PowerPoint wins on design depth, advanced motion (Morph), a huge template ecosystem,
Designer/SmartArt, precise print/handout control, and strong offline work in a true desktop app โ and it's
simply what most workplaces expect. Google Slides wins on being free with a Google
account and on effortless, built-in real-time collaboration. For most everyday presenting, either tool is
more than enough. The skills you build here transfer to Slides almost one-for-one โ and the two round-trip
.pptx files โ so you're never learning a dead end.
What You'll Learn
- Confidently add, organize, and reorder slides, and use layouts and placeholders the right way
- Use the Slide Master โ the single habit that makes a whole deck consistent and easy to restyle
- Design slides that work โ themes, color and type, images, shapes, icons, Designer, alignment, distribution, and SmartArt diagrams
- Add video, audio, transitions (including Morph), and animation tastefully, with timing that helps rather than distracts
- Structure and deliver a talk โ speaker notes, Presenter View, Rehearse, Speaker Coach, and export to video
- Collaborate in real time with sharing, comments, co-authoring, version history, and live Excel charts linked into your deck
- Build real decks โ a pitch deck, a lesson/training deck, a visual portfolio, and an infographic one-pager
- Use templates, add-ins, and Copilot honestly (what's free vs paid), master accessibility and export, and finish with a full designed-presentation capstone
Who This Course Is For
- Complete beginners who want to build presentations with confidence โ we assume nothing
- Google Slides users curious about (or switching to) PowerPoint who want the differences mapped out honestly
- Students presenting projects who need a clean, readable deck and confident delivery
- Professionals, founders & freelancers building pitch decks, reports, training, and shared team presentations
- Teachers, speakers & creators who present regularly and want decks that look designed and land with an audience
๐ How to Get the Most Out of This Course (and Out of PowerPoint)
Presentations reward a particular way of working: message first, design through the theme, and the slide supports the speaker. Follow these principles and you'll get ten times the value โ from the course and from PowerPoint for years afterward.
๐ง Mindset
- You can't break it. Save to OneDrive and PowerPoint autosaves every change and keeps a version history you can roll back to. Experiment freely โ try a theme, undo it, try another. That's how you learn.
- Design through the master, not by hand. The biggest leap from amateur to capable is editing the theme and Slide Master once instead of decorating each slide. Change it in one place and every slide updates โ consistent, fast, and professional.
- The slide is a visual aid, not your script. The deck supports what you say; it isn't the thing you read aloud. Fewer words on screen, the detail in your speaker notes, and the audience listens to you instead of reading past you.
- Concepts over buttons. Microsoft moves the ribbon and adds features regularly, and the web and desktop apps differ. We teach the durable ideas โ layouts, the master, design, motion, delivery โ so you're never lost when the interface shifts.
๐ ๏ธ How to work through the lessons
- Keep PowerPoint open beside the lesson. Do every step live in your own deck. Reading about the Slide Master teaches you nothing; editing it and watching every slide update teaches you everything.
- Use a real presentation you care about. A pitch you actually have to give, a lesson you'll actually teach, a portfolio you'll actually share. A deck you'll genuinely keep beats ten throwaway practice files.
- Do the Learning Journal. Every lesson ends with a short reflection prompt. Writing down what clicked (and what tripped you up) is the fastest way to make it stick.
- Follow the order once, then wander. Layouts and the master come before the flashy motion and AI for a reason โ the fancy stuff is easy once the foundation is solid.
โก Habits that compound
- Theme first, decorate never. Set colors, fonts, and the master up front so every new slide is already on-brand. Change the theme once and the whole deck follows.
- One idea per slide. If a slide needs three messages, it's three slides. Clarity beats density every time.
- Notes carry the detail. Put the words you'll say in speaker notes, not on the slide. The screen shows the headline; you provide the story.
- Comment, don't overwrite. When editing someone's deck, use comments. It's collaborative, reversible, and respectful.
- Save reusable pieces. A theme, a template, a title slide, a diagram โ build it once, reuse it forever.
โฑ๏ธ How much time?
About 20โ24 hours of focused work across 24 lessons. A sustainable pace is 2โ3 lessons a week โ roughly six to eight weeks, with a real deck growing the whole time. In a hurry? Modules 1โ3 (nine lessons) already make you better with presentations than most people who "use PowerPoint at work."
๐ท A word on cost, up front and honest
You can complete most of this course for free with a personal Microsoft account and PowerPoint for the web โ it does everything we teach as core. Paid tiers add the full desktop power: Microsoft 365 (personal, family, or business โ unlocks the desktop apps with Morph, advanced animation, and more), a one-time Office purchase, and Copilot (the AI add-on, separate and paid). We flag every desktop-only or paid feature as it appears. Exact prices, plan names, and which features are included change often and vary by country and account, so we hedge the numbers and point you to Microsoft's current pages rather than quoting figures that go stale. The interface evolves fast too โ so we teach durable concepts, not pixel positions.
